The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the U.S. Secretary of State and Defense Secretary will visit Kiev on Sunday, that (?) the most senior US officials to visit Ukraine since the start of the war. Mr. Zelenskyy also said about half a million people including at least 5,000 children had been deported from Russian occupied parts of Ukraine to Russian territory.
Ukraine’s foreign minister has condemned a Russian missile strike on a residential block of flats in Odessa. Eight people were killed. And the governor of the eastern Luhansk region said six civilians had died in Russian shelling of the village of Girske.
More than 100 people have been killed in two explosions at an illegal oil refining depot in southeast Nigeria. Unemployment and poverty in the Niger Delta region have made illegal refining an attractive business but often with deadly consequences.
Rescuers in Japan say four people have been found after a sightseeing boat went missing off Hokkaido. 26 people were on board. The coast guards said it could not confirm whether those rescued were still alive.
A Mauritanian man who’s held in Guantanamo Bay for 14 years without trial is suing Canada over its alleged role in his detention. Mohamedou Ould Slahi alleges Ottawa of providing false information which led to his arrest and subsequent torture at the U.S. prison.
Tens of thousands of Argentine farmers have protested in Buenos Aires, demanding that the government lower taxes on food exports. They say the restrictions are causing them financial ruin. The President said he was willing to hear their demands but described the protest as politically motivated.
One of Belgium’s best-known singers Arno has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 72. A performer in French, Dutch and English, he was part of the 1980s Europe rock group “TC Matic” before embarking on a successful solo career.
